MI favourites, but new-look DC ready to challenge amid rain threat

Mumbai Indians head into their IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals as strong favourites, but a revamped opposition and uncertain weather could make for a tight contest in Delhi.

MI’s dominance in this fixture is clear. Since 2022, they lead the head-to-head 5-2 and completed a double over DC last season. Their victory against DC in 2025 also sparked a six-match winning streak that carried them into the playoffs. This year, they arrive with momentum again, having already won their opening game.

However, DC are far from the same side. With additions like KL Rahul at the top, Nitish Rana in the middle, and David Miller as a finisher, their batting looks deeper. The bowling unit has also been strengthened by Lungi Ngidi and a fit-again T Natarajan.

The spotlight will be on Ngidi and Jasprit Bumrah—two of the most effective T20 bowlers. Ngidi’s variations, especially his slower ball, have already made an impact this season, while Bumrah remains MI’s spearhead despite a relatively modest record at this venue.

MI’s batting unit, featuring Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, provides experience and firepower. Meanwhile, DC will rely on balance and adaptability under captain Axar Patel.

Conditions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium are expected to favour batters, but rain could play a decisive role, with thunderstorms forecast.

While MI’s record and form give them the edge, DC’s new-look lineup ensures this is far from a one-sided contest.
