MCA to Honour Ravi Shastri with Stand at Wankhede Stadium

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced that a stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium will be named after Ravi Shastri, honouring his significant contribution to Mumbai and Indian cricket.

The Level 1 stand below the press box will now bear Shastri’s name, a tribute to a career that spanned success as a player, captain and coach. Shastri represented Mumbai in domestic cricket before forging a distinguished international career, playing 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India. Later, as head coach from 2017 to 2021, he oversaw historic achievements including India’s first-ever Test series win in Australia in 2018-19, followed by a second triumph there in 2020-21.

MCA president Ajinkya Naik said the decision reflects the association’s commitment to recognising stalwarts who have brought pride to the city and the nation.

In addition to the Shastri stand, three gates at the stadium will be named after former India greats Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji.

Sardesai played a pivotal role in India’s landmark 1971 Test series win in the West Indies, scoring 642 runs on that tour. Solkar was widely regarded as one of the finest close-in fielders in the game, particularly at short leg. Edulji, a pioneer of women’s cricket in India, captained the national side in 22 internationals and remains an influential figure in the sport’s administration.

The MCA said the initiative ensures that every fan entering Wankhede is reminded of the legends who helped shape Mumbai’s rich cricketing legacy.
