India begin their five-match T20I series against West Indies in Lucknow on Tuesday without Jasprit Bumrah, with Mayank Yadav recalled to a reshaped pace attack
The first T20I at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium starts at 7pm IST, and it is Shreyas Iyer's first bilateral assignment since he led India to gold at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
Iyer's 15-man squad, named on September 16, carries much of that Asian Games group, with Tilak Varma as his vice-captain and Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi among the batting options.
India won the one-day leg of the tour 2-1, but they were beaten in the final match at New Chandigarh, where West Indies completed the highest successful run chase in their ODI history. Shai Hope leads the tourists in the T20Is as well.
Bumrah is the most significant absentee. He was part of India's Asian Games squad, whose campaign ran until October 3, and the selectors chose not to ask him to turn around for a series beginning three days later.
That leaves Arshdeep Singh as the most experienced seamer in the group, with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube offering overs at medium pace.
India's spin stocks are unchanged and deep: Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi are all in the squad, and West Indies answer with Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie.
Mayank Yadav returns to the T20I squad after a spell out of the side, and Prince Yadav has been retained with him.
Both men play their IPL cricket for Lucknow Super Giants, so the series opens on a ground they know well.
Mayank's selection has always been about pace rather than volume, and with Bumrah absent the opening week of the series gives India a look at what a second genuinely fast bowler would add.
India changed the squad once it was named. The BCCI said on October 1 that "the Senior Selection Committee, in consultation with the team management, has decided to withdraw Washington Sundar from India's squad for the T20I series".
The board explained that "the decision has been taken in view of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand", adding that "with the Ranji Trophy season commencing on October 11, Washington will get an opportunity to play red-ball cricket".
Naman Dhir was named as his replacement, a first T20I call-up for the batting all-rounder, who made his ODI debut earlier on this tour. "The communication given to me was that I will be batting at 6 or 7, and was prepared for being utilised as the 5th or 6th bowler," Dhir said of his role in the one-day side.
The tourists have reshaped their squad between formats. Shimron Hetmyer comes back for the T20I leg after sitting out the one-dayers, while Jason Holder has been rested.
Jewel Andrew hurt a finger in the third ODI, and Amir Jangoo was added as cover. Jangoo arrives in form, having passed fifty in each of the three one-day internationals.
Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase and Romario Shepherd give Hope a familiar middle order, and Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde carry the seam attack.
The series runs at a brisk clip. After Lucknow, the sides meet in Ranchi on October 9, Indore on October 11 and Hyderabad on October 14 before finishing in Bengaluru on October 17.
For India it is the first extended look at a T20I side under Iyer outside a multi-team event, and the squad's shape suggests the selectors want the fringe seamers examined before the Test summer takes the senior bowlers away.
The second T20I is in Ranchi on October 9.
