Mason Crane Earns England Recall After Nearly Nine Years Away From International Cricket
England leg-spinner Mason Crane is set for another opportunity on the international stage after being named in the squad for the upcoming ODI tri-series in Pakistan. The 29-year-old's recall marks a significant milestone in his career, nearly nine years after his previous appearances for England in international cricket.
Crane made three international appearances for England in 2017 and early 2018. His last outing came during the final Test of the 2017–18 Ashes series in Sydney, where he dismissed Australian batter Usman Khawaja, who had scored 171 runs. England eventually lost the Ashes series 4-0. Crane also featured in two T20 Internationals against South Africa, claiming the wicket of former Proteas captain AB de Villiers.
Speaking about his selection on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Crane admitted that he had begun to doubt whether he would receive another international opportunity. He explained that there was a period when the pressure of trying to prove himself affected his enjoyment of the game. However, over the last couple of years, he has rediscovered his motivation and ambition, making his England recall particularly rewarding.
Crane's performances in domestic cricket have played an important role in bringing him back into contention. During the 2026 season, he claimed 34 wickets in 14 County Championship matches and added another 15 wickets in 10 Vitality Blast appearances. These performances have demonstrated his ability to contribute across different formats and strengthened his case for international selection.
The leg-spinner has also focused on developing greater consistency and expanding his bowling options. Rather than relying on occasional standout deliveries, Crane wants to become a bowler who can read match situations, identify opponents' weaknesses and adapt his approach to different conditions. He has worked on improving his variations while gaining greater confidence in using them during matches.
England's upcoming tri-series in Pakistan will provide Crane with an opportunity to demonstrate how much his game has developed since his previous international appearances. England are scheduled to begin their campaign against Pakistan in Rawalpindi on 20 October, with the tournament forming part of their preparations for future major international competitions.
For Crane, the recall represents more than a return to the national squad. After years of domestic cricket, personal development and uncertainty about his international future, he now has another chance to establish himself at the highest level. His recent performances suggest that he is ready to make the most of the opportunity and contribute to England's spin-bowling options.
