Mahela Jayawardene Steps Down as Mumbai Indians Head Coach After Two Seasons

Mahela Jayawardene Steps Down as Mumbai Indians Head Coach After Two Seasons

Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as the head coach of Mumbai Indians, bringing an end to his second stint in the role, the IPL franchise announced on October 17, 2026. Jayawardene returned as head coach ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League season, replacing Mark Boucher, after previously holding the position from 2017 to 2022. During his first tenure, the former Sri Lanka captain played a key role in Mumbai Indians' success, guiding the franchise to three IPL titles. He later served as the team's global head of performance from 2022 to 2024, overseeing Mumbai Indians' wider franchise network, including MI Emirates in the ILT20, MI New York in Major League Cricket and MI Cape Town in the SA20.

In a statement released by Mumbai Indians, Jayawardene described the franchise as a special part of his journey, highlighting the relationships he had built with the players, coaching staff, management and supporters over more than a decade. He expressed gratitude to franchise owners Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their trust, support and friendship, adding that he would always cherish the memories and achievements shared with the team. Nita Ambani also thanked Jayawardene for his contribution, praising his calm leadership, integrity and commitment to the franchise. She emphasised that he would always remain part of the Mumbai Indians family and wished him success in his future endeavours.

Jayawardene's second stint as head coach proved less successful than his first. Mumbai Indians finished fourth in the league stage of IPL 2025 but were eliminated after losing Qualifier 2. Their performance deteriorated further in 2026, when they finished ninth after winning just four of their 14 matches. Mumbai Indians last won the IPL title in 2020, when they became the first team to successfully defend the championship, with both of their consecutive title-winning campaigns in 2019 and 2020 coming under Jayawardene's leadership.

His departure comes at a crucial time for the franchise, with the IPL retention deadline scheduled for November 15 and the next auction expected to take place around a month later in Goa. Mumbai Indians will now need to identify a new head coach and establish their plans for the upcoming season within a limited timeframe. The franchise is also facing questions about its leadership following its disappointing 2026 campaign, with captain Hardik Pandya coming under scrutiny after the team's poor finish. Pandya scored 206 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 138.25 and took four wickets in 10 matches, with his highest score being 40. Reports and social media speculation have also linked him with a possible trade, although no confirmed decision has been announced.

The possibility of changes to Mumbai Indians' coaching setup had reportedly been discussed during the franchise's season review in August 2026. Both the player leadership group and the management were understood to favour a change, with Jayawardene also reportedly open to introducing younger coaches and fresh perspectives. The incoming head coach will have the opportunity to assess the existing support staff, which includes assistant coach Kieron Pollard and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey. Mumbai Indians' next appointment will be important as the five-time IPL champions look to rebuild their momentum, improve their performances and return to the title race after two challenging seasons.
