Madsen Milestone Puts Derbyshire in Control Against Gloucestershire

Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen once again proved to be Gloucestershire's nemesis, notching up the 40th first-class century of his career on day two of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two clash in Derby.

The 41-year-old’s sublime 118—his sixth century against Gloucestershire—was central to Derbyshire’s strong reply, supported by Harry Came’s composed 83 as the pair shared a third-wicket stand worth 177. Along the way, Madsen also surpassed 16,000 first-class runs, underlining his enduring class and influence.

A brisk 61 from Zak Chappell off just 67 deliveries helped Derbyshire to a total of 391, securing a first-innings lead of 169. Marchant de Lange stood out with the ball for the visitors, claiming 3 for 31.

In reply, Gloucestershire closed on 128 for 3, still trailing by 41 runs, with Ben Charlesworth holding firm on 77 not out.

Madsen Masterclass

Under a clear sky and against a wayward Gloucestershire attack—de Lange aside—Madsen capitalized on loose bowling, regularly dispatching short and wide deliveries. He set the tone early, upper-cutting Zaman Akhter for six, while Came reached his half-century from 80 balls, featuring nine boundaries.

Derbyshire cruised through the morning session, adding 68 runs in the first hour. Madsen’s half-century, the 89th of his first-class career, came off 81 balls. Gloucestershire’s woes deepened when Came, on 64, edged a chance to second slip only to see it go down—but he was eventually trapped lbw by Ollie Price just before lunch, with Derbyshire already leading by 49.

Gloucestershire Fight Back, Briefly

After the break, the visitors produced their best spell of the match. De Lange dismissed Brooke Guest and then lured Luis Reece into a loose drive. Tom Price trapped Anuj Dal lbw before the Price brothers combined again to remove Martin Andersson.

Despite the collapse—four wickets for 10 runs in just 26 balls—Madsen remained composed, reaching his century from 144 balls. Though dropped soon after by Ollie Price, the offspinner eventually claimed him via a failed reverse sweep.

But any hopes Gloucestershire had of wrapping up the innings quickly were dashed by Chappell’s counterattack. He smashed Ollie Price for two sixes en route to a 60-ball fifty before falling to Matt Taylor.

Gloucestershire’s Rocky Response

The visitors’ second innings began poorly, with Chris Dent inside-edging Chappell onto his stumps. A promising 70-run stand between Charlesworth and Ollie Price steadied the innings, but a well-set trap saw Price flick Pat Brown straight to leg gully.

Luis Reece then struck again, trapping Miles Hammond lbw after he moved too far across his stumps. Charlesworth and James Bracey survived the remaining overs, but Gloucestershire face a steep challenge to stay in the match.

They’ll need a long and determined effort on day three to resist Derbyshire’s charge.
