Tom Latham Ruled Out of Pakistan ODIs with Fractured Hand; Bracewell to Captain

Tom Latham has been sidelined from New Zealand’s upcoming ODI series against Pakistan after fracturing his right hand during training. Michael Bracewell will step in as captain in Latham’s absence, while Henry Nicholls has been added to the squad as a replacement.

Latham was set to lead the side with Mitchell Santner currently playing in the IPL, but a blow to his hand during a training session led to scans confirming the injury.

Wicketkeeping duties will now fall to Mitch Hay, while Bracewell, who captained New Zealand during the recently concluded T20I series, will continue in the leadership role.

In another squad update, Will Young will leave the team after the first ODI in his hometown of Napier to be with his wife ahead of the birth of their first child. Uncapped 23-year-old batter Rhys Mariu, who averages 61.73 in first-class cricket, has received his maiden call-up as cover.

“We've had to remain adaptable throughout this tour with several players unavailable for various reasons,” said New Zealand head coach Gary Stead. “It’s unfortunate to lose Tom just before the series begins, but it also opens the door for others. Michael has done a fantastic job as captain in the T20Is, and we’re confident in his leadership.”

“It’s great to bring Rhys into the squad for the first time and to welcome back Henry Nicholls, who’s been in good form after recovering from injury,” Stead added. “We also send our best wishes to Will and his wife Elise during this special time.”

Earlier, uncapped players Muhammad Abbas and Nick Kelly had also been included in the squad, while regular captain Kane Williamson opted out of the series.

New Zealand come into the ODIs after winning the T20I series against Pakistan 4–1.
