Kotian's seven-for leaves Railways chasing 372 as Mumbai declare at the Brabourne

Tanush Kotian's seven-wicket haul and a brisk Mumbai declaration have left Railways needing 352 more runs on the final day at the Brabourne Stadium

Mumbai declared their second innings at 234 for 4 on the fourth morning of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group D match against Railways, setting the home side a target of 372.

Railways had moved to 20 without loss from 7.4 overs in reply, leaving them 352 short with all ten wickets standing and the better part of a day to bat.

The declaration was built on the passage of play that defined the match. Tanush Kotian took 7-45 from 18.5 overs to dismiss Railways for 259 on the third day, a return that gave Mumbai a first-innings lead of 137 and the time to force a result.

Kotian takes the morning

The off-spinner did most of his damage before lunch on the third day, when he had 5-31 from 13.1 overs as Railways slid from 116 for 2 to 214 for 7.

Ravi Singh was the most fluent of those who resisted, making 43 from 44 balls with four fours and two sixes before Kotian bowled him. Mohammad Saif had earlier made 37 from 52 and captain Bhargav Merai 30.

Kotian returned after the interval to finish the innings off, and both his teammates and the spectators at the Cricket Club of India stood to applaud him from the field.

Raghuvanshi and Saxena set the platform

Railways had put Mumbai in on the opening morning, and Mumbai's openers made them pay twice over. Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Divyaansh Saxena put on 146 for the first wicket in the second innings, the stand that took the match beyond their hosts.

Raghuvanshi made 79 from 84 balls before Raj Choudhry removed him. Saxena was 68 not out at stumps on the third evening, with Sarfaraz Khan on 3 alongside him and Mumbai 174 for 4, already 311 ahead.

Raghuvanshi had also made 78 from 122 balls in the first innings, an innings of 11 fours and two sixes. Sarfaraz Khan made 55 from 100 and captain Siddhesh Lad 47 as Mumbai posted 396.

Himanshu Sangwan was the pick of the Railways attack on the opening day with 3-32 from 17 overs.

A spinner in the form of his career

Kotian arrived at the Brabourne in the best run of his career. In the previous round, against Haryana, he took a career-best 8-81 and 11 wickets in the match, the first ten-wicket haul of his first-class career.

That came in his 50th first-class match, and it sealed a 10-wicket win that left Mumbai clear at the top of the group.

He has carried the attack in the absence of Shardul Thakur, who is out with a hand injury sustained when a return shot from Ayush Mhatre struck him during a bowling session. Thakur was expected to miss at least the first four rounds of the season.

Railways at home on a borrowed stage

Railways have moved their home matches to the Brabourne Stadium this season, which makes Mumbai the visiting side in their own city.

The hosts are two-time champions, having won the Ranji Trophy in 2001-02 and 2004-05. Last season they finished fourth in Elite Group C with 23 points from seven matches, narrowly missing the knockouts.

Mumbai, who have won the competition 42 times, came into the round unbeaten after bonus-point wins over Chandigarh by an innings and 155 runs, Himachal Pradesh by an innings and 97 runs, and Haryana by 10 wickets.

The last red-ball match before the break

Mumbai lead Elite Group D with 21 points from three matches, and a fourth win would harden a position that already looks settled.

This is the last round of red-ball cricket before the season turns to white-ball competition, with the Ranji Trophy due to resume in January.

For Railways, batting out the final day at their adopted home would be a result in itself.

Scorecard: Mumbai 396 and 234 for 4 declared; Railways 259 (Tanush Kotian 7-45) and 20 for 0, need 352 more to win
