Jayden Seales removed Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli inside the third over to leave India rebuilding in the final ODI against West Indies at New Chandigarh
India chose to bat on winning the toss at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium and were immediately in trouble, losing their captain and their most experienced batter in the same over.
Both wickets fell to Jayden Seales, who had figures of 2 for 2 at the end of that third over and gave West Indies the start they have been chasing all series.
India had reached 55 for 2 after 14 overs, with Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad rebuilding at a little under four an over.
Gill went first, pushing at a back-of-a-length delivery and edging it through to Shai Hope behind the stumps. He had made 1, and India had lost their captain inside the third over.
Kohli followed on the next ball he faced. Seales pitched it full on the line of off and middle at 136.5 kph, found a hint of inward movement, and knocked back the middle stump as the batter played across the line.
It was the sharpest new-ball spell West Indies have produced on this tour, and it came in a match they entered with the series already gone.
Kohli has not been dismissed first ball in a one-day international since December 2019, when Kieron Pollard had him caught at short mid-wicket in Visakhapatnam — also against West Indies.
That dismissal is remembered for an oddity rather than the cricket: both captains fell for a golden duck in the same match, Pollard going the same way later in the innings.
Almost seven years on, the method could hardly have been more different. In Visakhapatnam the ball was short and Kohli picked out a fielder; at New Chandigarh it was full, it moved, and it hit the stumps.
It is also a long way from how Kohli began this series. He made an unbeaten 139 in the opener at Thiruvananthapuram, his 55th ODI hundred, in the innings that carried him past 15,000 ODI runs as India chased 296 with 50 balls to spare.
Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad came together with the innings barely started and chose caution over counter-attack, working the ball into gaps rather than taking on the seamers.
The approach carried India past 50 without further loss, though it left the scoring rate well short of what a full batting line-up would expect on a true surface.
Individual scores for the pair were not available on the app's feed at the time of writing, with the partnership still unbroken at the 14-over mark.
India named Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar in a seam attack led by Mohammed Siraj, with Kuldeep Yadav the specialist spinner and KL Rahul keeping wicket.
Nitish Kumar Reddy and Naman Dhir give the middle order its all-round options, with Rohit Sharma, Gill, Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad making up the top four.
West Indies kept faith with Hope as captain and wicketkeeper, with Alzarri Joseph, Matthew Forde, Keemo Paul and Gudakesh Motie completing the attack alongside Seales.
India lead the three-match series 2-0 and are playing for a clean sweep; West Indies are playing to avoid one.
For the tourists, two wickets in the third over is the first genuine hold they have taken on an Indian top order that has dominated the series so far.
For India, the task has shifted from setting a statement total to building one from a position they have rarely had to face in this series.
Live score: India 55 for 2 in 14 overs (Seales 2 for 2) against West Indies, 3rd ODI, Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh.
