Orange Cap Shuffle: Suryakumar Overtakes Kohli After Double-Header Drama

IPL 2025’s Orange Cap standings saw a significant shake-up during a thrilling double-header Sunday. Virat Kohli briefly claimed the No. 3 spot on the run-scorers' chart after a classy knock in the afternoon game, only to be overtaken later in the evening by Mumbai Indians’ Suryakumar Yadav.

Orange Cap Update

Kohli became the fifth batter this season to cross the 300-run mark after guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Punjab Kings. Chasing 158, Kohli anchored the innings with an unbeaten 73 off 54 balls. That innings brought his season tally to 322 runs at an impressive average of 64.40—second only to Tim David (142.00) among batters with over 150 runs. However, his strike rate of 140.00 is the lowest among the current top five.

But by the end of the day, Suryakumar Yadav leapfrogged him with a blistering 68* off just 30 balls, powering MI to a dominant nine-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings. His total now stands at 333 runs, pushing Kohli down to fourth. Suryakumar trails only Nicholas Pooran (368) of Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans’ B Sai Sudharsan (365), who plays next against KKR and needs just four runs to claim the Orange Cap.

Also crossing the 300-run mark this weekend were GT’s Jos Buttler (315) and Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal (307). LSG’s Mitchell Marsh, who had been in the top three earlier in the season, has now slipped to No. 7 with 299 runs.

Purple Cap Update

There was little movement on the Purple Cap front. Table-topper Prasidh Krishna (GT) remains firmly in the lead with 14 wickets, as most of the chasing pack drew blanks on Sunday. Noor Ahmad and Khaleel Ahmed (CSK), Josh Hazlewood (RCB), and MI skipper Hardik Pandya all went wicketless, while Arshdeep Singh picked up one against RCB to inch closer.

Kuldeep Yadav (DC), Noor, Hazlewood, and Shardul Thakur (LSG) are locked behind Krishna with 12 wickets each. Five bowlers sit just one behind them with 11: R Sai Kishore and Mohammed Siraj (GT), Hardik, Arshdeep, and Khaleel.

With several teams still to play in the coming days, expect more shake-ups as the Cap races heat up.
