Khawaja Will “Play for the Team” as He Mentors Young Opener Konstas

Usman Khawaja has reaffirmed his commitment to the Australian Test side, saying he has “plenty to give” despite scrutiny over recent returns against high-quality pace attacks. The veteran opener, 38, is set to play a pivotal role in nurturing debutant 19‑year‑old opener Sam Konstas, as Australia transition from David Warner’s long‑held spot at the top of the order.

Khawaja, who was Australia’s leading run-scorer across the last World Test Championship cycle and second overall behind Yashasvi Jaiswal, admits the scrutiny of his form is part of the job for an opener. “I open the batting for Australia, and that means I get out to the new-ball bowlers more than anyone else. It’s part and parcel of the game,” he said, defending his record and making it clear he is still making valuable contributions.

With five opening partners since Warner’s retirement, Khawaja hopes to build a long‑term partnership with the young Konstas. “With young Sammy coming in, it’s an added role for me – making sure I guide him through the early part of his journey,” he said. “I won’t be around forever, but I can certainly impart as much knowledge as I can. It’s about stability at the top and making sure he’s ready for the challenges of opening in Test cricket.”

While speculation has linked the Sydney Test at the end of the Ashes as a possible swansong, Khawaja maintains that he will stay in the moment. “I’m not here for myself anymore. I could have stopped playing two years ago, but I still feel I can do a job for the team. When that changes, you’ll be the first to know,” he said, reaffirming his role as a senior player and mentor within a transitioning Australia side.
