Khaleel Ahmed Joins Essex for County Championship and One-Day Cup Stint

India left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed has signed with Essex for the remainder of the 2025 County Championship and the full One-Day Cup campaign, marking his debut in English county cricket. The two-month deal runs through late September and includes six first-class matches and up to ten List A games, should Essex reach the One-Day Cup final.

Khaleel will link up with the squad in York and is available for selection for the Championship clash against Yorkshire, starting Sunday. Expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity, Khaleel said he was excited to contribute and connect with the club’s passionate supporters at Chelmsford.

Essex’s Director of Cricket, Chris Silverwood, highlighted Khaleel’s left-arm angle as a valuable asset that would bring a “new dynamic” to the side's bowling lineup. Silverwood praised the seamer's recent performances with India A, believing Khaleel will bolster an already potent pace attack.

Khaleel brings with him solid credentials, including 56 wickets in 20 first-class games at an average of 27.67, and 15 wickets in 11 ODIs for India. He recently featured for India A against the England Lions in June, further sharpening his red-ball game.

The signing comes at a critical juncture for Essex, who are currently languishing at eighth in Division One, with just one win in eight matches. Khaleel joins a growing list of Indian players in county cricket this season, including Ishan Kishan (Nottinghamshire), Tilak Varma (Hampshire), Ruturaj Gaikwad (Yorkshire), and Yuzvendra Chahal (Northamptonshire).
