Kagiso Rabada’s Suspension Confirmed to Be Over Cocaine Use

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada tested positive for cocaine, as officially confirmed by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) on June 3. The positive result came from a test conducted on January 21 during the SA20 tournament, where Rabada was playing for MI Cape Town. The detected substance was Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite produced after the body processes cocaine.

Rabada, who continued to play in the SA20 and later represented South Africa at the Champions Trophy, was notified of the result in late March. He quietly served a one-month suspension from April 1 to May 1, missing a substantial portion of the IPL season. At the time, his absence was publicly attributed to "personal reasons."

The reduced sanction stemmed from three key factors:

• Cocaine is a recreational, not performance-enhancing, drug.

• Rabada used it on a non-match day, making it an out-of-competition violation.

• He cooperated fully and committed to an educational rehabilitation program.

Rabada did not appeal the ban and was cleared to return on May 1. Since then, he has played for Gujarat Titans in the IPL and rejoined the South African squad ahead of the World Test Championship final. His public statement, issued via the South African Cricketers Association on May 3, acknowledged drug use but withheld details.

Despite support from Cricket South Africa, coach Shukri Conrad, and captain Temba Bavuma, the incident has attracted criticism—particularly from Australia’s former captain Tim Paine, who questioned the lack of transparency. Rabada, however, appears unfazed, stating he won’t be "Mr I Apologise" and is ready to face scrutiny, especially from opponents like Australia: "They come at you... and they have been notorious for that over the years, right? So yeah, let's see."

As Rabada moves forward, the focus now shifts to how he reintegrates into the South African setup, with both on-field performance and off-field composure under the spotlight.
