South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has confirmed that he tested positive for a recreational drug earlier this year and has been serving a provisional suspension, which explains his sudden departure from the IPL on April 3. At the time, his franchise Gujarat Titans cited a “significant personal matter” as the reason for his exit, without offering further detail.

The incident reportedly occurred during the SA20 tournament in January-February, where Rabada played for MI Cape Town. Since then, he has not featured in any professional match, his last appearance coming on March 29. He has since returned to India, and a comeback is believed to be imminent.

In a statement released via the South African Cricketers' Association (SACA), Rabada publicly acknowledged the breach and expressed remorse. He called it a moment of personal failure but emphasized that it would not define his career. He thanked his support network—including his agent, Cricket South Africa (CSA), the Gujarat Titans, SACA, and his legal team—for standing by him. Most importantly, he expressed gratitude to his family and friends for their love and understanding during a difficult time.

While the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has yet to comment, a statement is expected soon. Given SAIDS’ alignment with WADA regulations, the final outcome will need global ratification. Precedent suggests Rabada may be handed a reduced ban similar to those given to athletes like Doug Bracewell, who returned after completing treatment programs.

Despite the setback, sources close to CSA have indicated there are no lingering concerns about Rabada missing upcoming fixtures, including the World Test Championship final against Australia in June. His statement and the surrounding response reflect both accountability and a strong desire to move forward professionally.
