Justin Greaves misses the Guwahati ODI after a calf injury during his maiden century

West Indies will be without Justin Greaves for the second one-day international in Guwahati after the allrounder injured a calf while making his maiden century in the format

Greaves has been ruled out of Wednesday's match against India at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, three days after he reached three figures in visible discomfort in Thiruvananthapuram. He is also doubtful for the third match of the series on 3 October.

The 31-year-old made 101 from 108 balls in the series opener, the first hundred of his one-day international career, before Kuldeep Yadav dismissed him. He did not take the field when West Indies bowled.

Sherfane Rutherford, who missed the opener for personal reasons, is expected to come into the middle order in his place. India lead the three-match series 1-0.

A hundred made through discomfort

Greaves was struggling with his movement well before he reached the landmark, calling for medical attention more than once and running gingerly between the wickets.

He batted on rather than retire, completed the century, and was then dismissed by Kuldeep. The innings held the West Indies total together on a surface that offered the batting side plenty.

West Indies posted 295 for 7 from their 50 overs. Greaves took no further part in the match.

Rutherford returns to the middle order

Rutherford was absent from the opening fixture for personal reasons and is now the likeliest replacement, restoring a hitter to a middle order that had little support for Greaves in Thiruvananthapuram.

The spot Greaves vacates is in the middle order rather than at the top, and Rutherford steps into the same role.

His return gives captain Shai Hope a batter of similar intent without the bowling that Greaves also supplies, leaving the balance of the side to be settled at the toss.

What the absence costs West Indies

Greaves has become one of the more dependable allrounders in the West Indies side since his international debut in 2022, with right-arm medium pace to go with the batting.

His recent red-ball record underlines the point. He made an unbeaten 202 against New Zealand in December 2025, and in a Test against Pakistan in July 2026 he bowled five consecutive wicket maidens.

He also has a first Test hundred to his name, an unbeaten 115 against Bangladesh in November 2024.

Losing that combination on a tour of this length narrows the options available to the touring selectors at short notice.

India arrive in Guwahati a win from the series

India chased down the target in Thiruvananthapuram with 50 balls remaining to win by eight wickets, and can take the series with a win on Wednesday.

Virat Kohli made an unbeaten 139 from 88 balls, with 10 fours and nine sixes, passing 15,000 runs in one-day internationals during the innings.

The second match is the middle fixture of a tour that runs to eight cities and does not finish until the middle of October.

No route back through the T20Is

Greaves was not named in the West Indies squad for the five-match T20I series that begins on 6 October, so the third one-day international is the only remaining fixture on this tour for which he could be considered.

The itinerary is made up of the three one-day internationals followed by the five Twenty20 internationals, with Hope leading in both formats.

West Indies have not put a recovery timeline on the injury beyond his doubtful status for that match.

A decision on Greaves for the third one-day international is expected once the calf has been assessed again after Wednesday's match in Guwahati.
