Josh Cobb Retires from Professional Cricket to Lead Warwickshire’s Boys Academy

Josh Cobb, the only player to be named Player of the Match in two T20 Blast finals, has announced his retirement from professional cricket to take on a new role as Boys Academy Lead at Warwickshire.

Cobb, 34, enjoyed a 448-game professional career that began at Leicestershire in 2007. He went on to represent Northamptonshire and Worcestershire, also securing a Bangladesh Premier League title with Dhaka Gladiators in 2013 and captaining Welsh Fire in The Hundred.

A hard-hitting top-order batter, Cobb first claimed a Player of the Match award in a Blast final for his bowling, taking 4 for 22 to help Leicestershire defeat Somerset in 2011. Five years later, his knock of 80 off 48 balls was instrumental in Northamptonshire’s second T20 title win against Durham at Edgbaston—the very ground he will now call home in his new coaching role.

Last September, Cobb gained coaching experience working as a consultant with Australia’s ODI squad in England, a role facilitated by his former Leicestershire teammate Andrew McDonald. Following in the footsteps of his father, Russell, who oversees the UCCE program at Loughborough University, Cobb is now transitioning into coaching.

"Since making my debut 18 years ago, it's been an incredible journey filled with highs and lows," Cobb said in a statement on Tuesday. "I'm immensely grateful for the people I’ve met, the places I’ve traveled, and the memories I’ve created. Cricket has given me so much—scoring my first hundred at Lord’s at 18 and winning two T20 Blast Finals are moments I will always cherish."

Warwickshire’s academy has produced recent talents such as Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley, and Cobb is eager to continue that tradition. "My goal is to keep developing homegrown players who can represent the Bears and, ultimately, England," he added. "I’m excited to lead an academy at a prestigious club like Warwickshire, which has a rich history of success."
