Jennings Hopes Match-Winning Century Sparks Turnaround in Season

uly 27: Lancashire captain Keaton Jennings is hoping his outstanding century against Leicestershire marks the beginning of a strong second half of the season after admitting he has struggled to produce his best form so far this summer.

Jennings struck a superb 135 off 134 balls to lead Lancashire to a massive 383 for 4, the second-highest List A total in the club's history, before they secured a 21-run victory over Leicestershire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Marcus Harris provided early momentum with a blistering 71 from 46 deliveries, while 17-year-old Joe Moores finished the innings in style with an unbeaten 41 off just 15 balls.

Jennings pleased with complete team performance

Reflecting on the victory, Jennings praised both the batting and bowling units, particularly the early breakthroughs with the ball."We bowled really well and batted strongly. It was a good batting surface, but the new ball offered assistance. Picking up four early wickets made a huge difference and put us in control of the game."

First century of the summer

The innings was Jennings' first century across all formats this season after missing the start of the County Championship campaign because of a calf injury.

The Lancashire skipper admitted his performances had not reached the standards he expected and hopes this knock will provide the confidence boost he has been searching for."I haven't produced many performances like this this year, so hopefully this innings can kickstart my season."

Jennings also acknowledged that fortune played a part after surviving a missed run-out opportunity in the 90s."I probably should have been run out, but sometimes those moments go your way. Other times you edge one and get given out, so it balances itself."

Lancashire make Leicestershire pay

Lancashire built their innings patiently before accelerating through the middle overs.

After reaching 56 without loss inside the opening ten overs, they crossed 139 for 1 at the halfway stage before Jennings and Harris added a century partnership for the third wicket.

Leicestershire were left frustrated by several missed opportunities in the field, including multiple dropped catches, a missed run-out and a number of costly extras.

Even after Jennings departed for 135, youngsters Joe Moores and Rocky Flintoff launched a late assault, helping Lancashire add another 72 runs in the final five overs.

Brave fightback falls short

Leicestershire's chase got off to the worst possible start, collapsing to 22 for 4 inside six overs as Tom Bailey and Mitch Stanley ripped through the top order.

However, Ruan de Swardt and Hamza Shaikh staged an outstanding recovery with a 179-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Shaikh scored an impressive 91, while de Swardt registered a career-best 126, keeping Leicestershire's hopes alive deep into the chase.

Late contributions from Ben Cox (43) and Tom Scriven (39 not out) added further excitement, but Lancashire eventually closed out the contest to complete an entertaining high-scoring victory.

Jennings will now look to build on his first century of the campaign as Lancashire continue their One-Day Cup challenge.
