Guyana, July 14: Jayden Lennox produced a career-best five-wicket haul as New Zealand defeated West Indies by five wickets in the second ODI, levelling the series.
Lennox returned outstanding figures of 5 for 19, helping bowl West Indies out for just 138 on a difficult, turning surface. The hosts suffered a dramatic collapse, losing all ten wickets for 75 runs after John Campbell and Ackeem Auguste had provided a solid 63-run opening stand.
Campbell top-scored with 43, but New Zealand's spin attack quickly took control. Lennox ripped through the middle and lower order, with his first four wickets all coming bowled. His figures became the third-best by a New Zealand spinner in men's ODI history, behind Ish Sodhi's 6 for 39 and Daniel Vettori's 5 for 7.
Captain Mitchell Santner also made an important impact, removing Campbell and Keacy Carty, while Michael Bracewell contributed to a dominant spin-bowling display. New Zealand's spinners claimed nine wickets, their most in a single ODI innings.
Chasing 139, New Zealand made a steady start through Henry Nicholls and Will Young, who added 35 for the opening wicket. However, West Indies fought back as the visitors slipped after losing three wickets for 17 runs.
Further strikes from Khary Pierre reduced New Zealand to 96 for 5, briefly giving the hosts hope of a comeback.
Tom Latham, however, remained composed and anchored the chase with an unbeaten 37. Alongside Michael Bracewell, he guided New Zealand safely to 141 for 5, completing the victory with plenty of breathing room.
The five-wicket win brings New Zealand level in the ODI series, with the third match scheduled to take place in Guyana on Thursday before the final two games move to Barbados.
