Jayawardene Banks on MI’s Core and Experience to Revive IPL Fortunes

Mumbai Indians (MI) enter IPL 2025 with several hurdles to overcome—a last-place finish in 2024, a new captain in Hardik Pandya who faced crowd backlash at Wankhede, and the absence of key players Jasprit Bumrah (for the early matches) and Pandya (for the opener against Chennai Super Kings). However, head coach Mahela Jayawardene is optimistic, placing faith in MI’s core group and experienced recruits to reshape their destiny.

"Last season posed challenges, but with a big auction behind us, we now have a fresh canvas to paint our destiny," Jayawardene said at MI's pre-season press conference. "Our core group understands the culture, how we need to play, and how to win."

Building Around Experience and Familiar Faces

MI has retained key players from previous seasons and welcomed back Trent Boult, Player of the Match in their 2020 IPL final victory. Jayawardene sees Boult’s return as a major boost alongside other experienced players.

"Bringing in old faces like Trent, who played a vital role in 2020, strengthens our team," he added. "It’s about building chemistry, understanding our strengths, and getting off to a strong start."

Addressing Dressing Room Speculation and Leadership Transition

Despite retaining a strong core last year, MI struggled early in the season, leading to speculation about internal rifts—especially surrounding the captaincy change from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya. Jayawardene, who was MI’s global head of performance in 2024, dismissed any notions of miscommunication.

"The communication within the team was good," he clarified. "Even though I wasn’t head coach, I was involved and aware of the dynamics. Our focus has always been on our core group, which has been central to our success over the years."

Hardik’s Leadership and the Influence of Multiple Captains

Pandya, fresh off vice-captaincy duties in India’s Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup-winning campaigns, leads a squad featuring three national captains—himself, Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav—as well as India’s Test vice-captain Bumrah.

"The last 12 months have been entertaining for me," Hardik said. "Having three captains in my team is a blessing. They will always be there to support me."

Addressing his leadership approach, he emphasized resilience: "Life has been a rollercoaster, but challenges excite me. My job is to help my players fight through them."

Adjusting MI’s Bowling Strategy in Bumrah’s Absence

One of MI’s biggest concerns is managing without Bumrah, their standout performer in 2024 (20 wickets, 6.48 economy rate). With his return expected in April, MI will rely on Boult, Deepak Chahar, Corbin Bosch, and Reece Topley to step up in the death overs.

Hardik acknowledged the challenge, particularly at Wankhede, which can be unforgiving for bowlers. "We prioritized experience in our bowling attack," he explained. "Adding players like Mitch [Santner] and Trent ensures we have bowlers who have handled pressure before."

Breaking the Opening Match Jinx

Adding to MI’s challenges is their historical struggle in season openers—they haven’t won their first IPL match since 2012. Facing CSK in Chennai on March 23 without Pandya and Bumrah will be another test.

"There's extra adrenaline playing CSK," Jayawardene admitted. "We have a big challenge to change history and start strong."

With a renewed squad and a blend of experience and fresh energy, MI is looking to turn the page on 2024’s disappointments and reclaim their status as IPL contenders.
