Jansen's five-for bowls Australia out for 99 and leaves South Africa 326 ahead
Marco Jansen took five wickets as Australia were bowled out for 99 at St George's Park, leaving South Africa 326 ahead on first innings
Australia, who won the toss and chose to bowl on a rain-affected opening day, were dismissed for 99 in 42.3 overs on the fourth day of the second Test in Gqeberha, in reply to South Africa's 425 for 9 declared.
Jansen claimed four of the first six wickets to fall before lunch, by which point Australia had subsided to 69 for 6, and returned afterwards to complete a five-wicket haul.
The innings leaves the tourists 326 runs behind and 126 short of the mark they needed to make South Africa bat again, with the fifth day still to come.
Jansen strikes with the day's first over
Nightwatchman Scott Boland edged behind off Jansen on the seventh ball of the morning, and the left-armer did not let up.
Travis Head was given out lbw for 14 on review, a dismissal that extended a run of six innings without passing 25.
Australia were 45 for 4 inside 14 overs, the ball moving enough off the seam to make every push forward a risk.
Matt Renshaw fell for 12, caught in the cordon off Jansen, and two balls later Alex Carey edged the same bowler behind for a duck to leave Australia six down at the interval.
Labuschagne's lean run goes on
Marnus Labuschagne made 14 before Simon Harmer held a sharp catch in the cordon off Anrich Nortje.
It continued a thin sequence of 4, 37, 37 and 14 across his innings against Bangladesh and South Africa, and he has not made a Test hundred since the fourth Test of the 2023 Ashes.
Dropped last year and recalled since, Labuschagne was told in August by coach Andrew McDonald that he "needs some big runs".
Nic Maddinson's duck on the third evening, edged to slip, was a third single-figure score in four innings, his returns since recall reading 0, 48 and 0.
Smith alone in resistance
Steve Smith, batting while managing a neck complaint, made 28 from 88 balls and was the only Australian to occupy the crease for any length of time.
He and Renshaw came close to seeing out the second hour of the morning without further loss before the pair fell either side of lunch.
Wiaan Mulder eventually bowled Smith and finished with 2 for 14 from 9.3 overs, adding Pat Cummins, caught by Matthew Breetzke, to his morning's work.
Beau Webster made 13 as Jansen's fifth victim, and Mitchell Starc edged Kagiso Rabada behind for 1 as the innings closed 25 short of three figures.
Nortje limps off
Nortje had taken 1 for 5 when he walked off with an upper-leg injury, having bowled only 2.3 further overs after the setback.
It leaves South Africa a bowler short for the remainder of a match they are otherwise dominating, though the margin is wide enough to absorb it.
Rabada, wicketless in the first session, regularly clocked beyond 150kph and beat the bat repeatedly before Starc's edge rewarded him late in the innings.
In the visiting camp, Cameron Green bowled in the nets as he works his way back from an abdominal strain.
South Africa's chance to level the series
The position was built by captain Temba Bavuma, whose career-best 179 lifted South Africa out of trouble on the third day and to a total that has proved far beyond Australia.
With a lead of 326 and a full day left, South Africa can ask Australia to follow on or bat again to set a target out of reach.
Australia lead the series 1-0 after winning the opening Test, and a South African victory here would square it with one match still to play.
Scorecard: South Africa 425 for 9 declared (Temba Bavuma 179) lead Australia 99 all out in 42.3 overs (Steve Smith 28; Marco Jansen five wickets) by 326 runs.
