Jack Morley Spins Derbyshire into Dominant Position Against Gloucestershire

Jack Morley claimed career‑best figures of 6 for 55 as Derbyshire dominated the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship Division Two match with Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.

Bowling around the wicket from the Ashley Down Road End, the 23‑year‑old left‑arm spinner delivered 18.2 overs that sparked a collapse, seeing the home side crash from 68 for no wicket to 187 all out after winning the toss.

Cameron Bancroft top‑scored for Gloucestershire with 58, while James Bracey contributed 47. Zak Chappell and Alex Thomson also chipped in with two wickets each for Derbyshire. By the close of a day in which six overs were lost to rain, the visitors had replied with 116 for 2, Harry Came unbeaten on 29.

Before play began, both teams observed a minute’s silence in honor of Gloucestershire president and former fast bowler David “Syd” Lawrence MBE, who passed away at the age of 61 following a long battle with motor neurone disease.

Only 50 minutes of play was possible before rain forced an early lunch at 12.30pm. At that point, Gloucestershire openers Bancroft and Joe Phillips — making his first appearance of the season — had added 35 runs from 12.2 overs.

After the resumption at 1.25pm, the openers looked settled until Phillips, on 27, drove Morley in the air to mid‑on where Ben Aitchison held a fine tumbling catch. Gloucestershire were soon 82 for 2 when Ollie Price was bowled on the back foot by a Morley delivery that hurried through, and 86 for 3 when Miles Hammond came down the pitch and mistimed a shot to Aitchison at mid‑off.

Bancroft reached a solid 114‑ball fifty, with eight boundaries, but departed soon after for 58, caught behind trying to pull a short ball from Chappell. Gloucestershire sank further when Graeme van Buuren was lbw to Thomson, pressing forward on off stump, and Ben Charlesworth was taken at second slip by Aitchison for a duck, attempting to drive the off‑spinner.

At 114 for 6, the innings was in tatters. But Bracey and Zaman Akhter halted the slide with a seventh‑wicket stand worth 37 by tea, Akhter making a statement with a reverse‑swept four and an off‑driven boundary in the same over from Thomson.

Bracey carried the momentum into the evening session, starting with a crisp straight drive for four from Chappell. He found his touch as the stand progressed to 64 before Akhter was bowled on the back foot by Morley for 32. Australia Test off‑spinner Todd Murphy, making his Gloucestershire debut, lasted only one run before being caught at deep square leg pulling Chappell, Aitchison claiming a fourth catch. Ajeet Singh Dale was then bowled by a Morley delivery that straightened, and Bracey, left with no partners, holed out to long‑on. Gloucestershire had lost all ten wickets for 119 runs in the space of just 36 overs.

Derbyshire were left with 28 overs to bat before stumps. Openers Luis Reece and Caleb Jewell took the score to 49 in the 11th over before Jewell, having just pulled Akhter for a six, fell to the same bowler, edging a back‑foot shot to second slip for 32 from 39 balls.

Murphy, introduced as early as the eighth over, was unable to trouble Derbyshire as Morley had done for Gloucestershire. But 19‑year‑old seamer Archie Bailey struck with only his eighth ball of the campaign when Luis Reece, having moved untroubled to 35, cut to point.

Came and Wayne Madsen guided Derbyshire to the close as they finished the day trailing by only 71 runs.
