Ireland cricket team won the toss and elected to bowl first against New Zealand cricket team in Belfast, where the two nations are meeting in Test cricket for the first time.
The four-day fixture marks Ireland’s first home Test in two years, but both teams were forced into late changes due to injuries. New Zealand suffered a major setback with experienced fast bowler Matt Henry ruled out because of a low-grade hamstring strain. Henry will now travel to London to continue rehabilitation ahead of New Zealand’s upcoming three-Test series against England cricket team.
Ireland were also without regular opener Paul Stirling after he sustained an injury before the match. In his absence, Stephen Doheny was drafted in to open the batting.
The hosts handed Test debuts to three seam bowlers — Thomas Mayes, Reuben Wilson and Liam McCarthy — highlighting Ireland’s decision to fully exploit Belfast’s seam-friendly conditions.
New Zealand also introduced a debutant, with allrounder Dean Foxcroft earning his first Test cap as part of a pace-heavy XI featuring four specialist seamers.
Conditions at Belfast are expected to heavily favour fast bowling early in the match due to likely seam movement, although unusually warm weather in Northern Ireland could gradually improve batting conditions as the game progresses. Spin may also become increasingly influential later in the contest.
Since Ireland are not part of the current ICC World Test Championship cycle, the match carries no championship points, but it remains an important preparation fixture for New Zealand ahead of their challenging England tour.
New Zealand will be led by Tom Latham, with key players including Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway forming the core of the batting lineup.
Ireland, captained by Andrew Balbirnie, will hope home conditions and youthful pace energy can help them challenge a powerful New Zealand side.
