IPL auction returns to India as Goa is set to stage the 2027 mini-auction on December 16

The IPL player auction is set to return to Indian soil for the first time since 2022, with Goa lined up to stage the 2027 mini-auction on December 16

All ten Indian Premier League franchises have been told the next auction will be held on December 16 at the ITC Grand Goa, with a team briefing the previous day, according to a Cricbuzz report of the message the board's logistics team sent the teams.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has since put the date on the record, telling Hindustan Times, "Yes, the auction will be held on December 16." Speaking to ANI, he said the board was "going to host it in Goa in the month of December".

Formal written confirmation to franchise owners and chief executives had still not landed when the first reports appeared, so the date remains one the teams are planning around rather than one they hold in writing.

What the franchises have been told

Word reached the teams through logistics rather than a circular. Franchise representatives were given the date and the venue and asked to confirm the size of their delegations so that rooms, flights and operational clearances could be arranged in Goa.

The note, as reported by Cricbuzz, read: "The IPL 2026 Player Auction will take place on December 16, 2026 at ITC Grand Goa." The reference to 2026 is a labelling slip — the auction stocks squads for the 2027 season.

A briefing for team management is set for December 15, at which revised player release and registration deadlines are expected to be run through before bidding begins the following morning.

A mini-auction, not a reset

This is a mini-auction, the last of the 2023-27 cycle, and it carries none of the upheaval of a mega auction. Franchises are not obliged to tear up their lists, and most squads are expected to carry over largely intact.

That makes it a market for gaps rather than rebuilds — a death bowler here, an overseas finisher there — with the heavy lifting already done at the 2025 mega auction.

The trading window is open in the meantime. It shuts a week before the auction, reopens a week after it and stays open until a month before the season starts, giving teams a second route to a player they miss in the room.

November 15 comes first

Before any of that, the franchises face a harder deadline. All ten must submit their final lists of retained and released players by November 15, a month before the auction.

That submission, not the auction itself, sets the pool. Every name the ten teams let go on November 15 becomes available in Goa, and the shape of the bidding will be clear long before anyone sits down at the table.

Goa back on the auction map

The auction has spent three straight editions abroad — Dubai for the 2024 season, Jeddah for 2025 and Abu Dhabi for 2026 — and a return to India restores an event that had drifted away from the audience it is staged for.

Goa itself is not new to it. The state hosted the 2009 auction at the Taj Aguada, and the last auction held anywhere in India was the mini-auction in Kochi in December 2022.

A clash in the calendar

December 16 is not a clear date. India are scheduled to play Sri Lanka in an ODI in Bengaluru the same day, which would put the auction and an India international in direct competition for attention and airtime.

The season that follows is still unfixed. Reports have put the 2027 edition between March 14 and May 30, while Saikia said after the BCCI's annual general meeting that it would begin at the end of March.

Until the BCCI's written confirmation reaches the owners and chief executives, December 16 in Goa is a date the ten franchises are working towards rather than one they have been formally handed.
