IPL 2027 auction set to return to India after three editions in the Gulf

The IPL Governing Council has decided to bring the 2027 players' auction back to India, ending a three-year run of editions staged in the Gulf

The decision was taken at the council's meeting on Tuesday, Cricbuzz reported, and would return the auction to Indian soil for the first time since Kochi staged it in 2023.

The franchises drove it. Several had questioned the value of sending delegations abroad for a mini-auction, citing the logistical and operational burden of an overseas trip.

No host city has been named, and the BCCI has not announced dates. The venue is not expected to be confirmed until the board has worked around a calendar problem of its own.

Three editions away from home

After Kochi in 2023, the auction moved to Dubai, then Jeddah, then Abu Dhabi, where the most recent edition was held last December.

Each of those was a decision about logistics and the calendar rather than a dispute about hosting, and the event itself is a compact one: a day or two of bidding run out of a single hotel.

That compactness is also precisely what made three successive overseas trips hard to justify to the ten teams.

The auction that returns to India will be the one that assembles the squads for the IPL's 20th season.

The franchises pushed for a return

Teams raised doubts about sending their delegates to an overseas venue for a mini-auction, according to the report, and the council accepted the argument.

A mini-auction is the smaller of the two exercises. Squads are largely settled beforehand, and franchises arrive with a handful of slots to fill rather than a full list to rebuild.

The travel, accreditation and support costs, however, are much the same as they are for a mega auction, and each table still carries owners, coaches, analysts and legal staff.

A five-star problem

The window under discussion runs from October to December, which in India is wedding season.

Organisers may need to block more than 100 rooms in a five-star hotel for a couple of days to house the franchises, the auctioneer's team, board officials and the broadcast operation.

Finding that much space in one property at that time of year is the practical constraint on which city is chosen, and it is the reason no venue has been put forward yet.

The report named no shortlist of cities.

The last one before the mega auction

This is the final mini-auction before the mega auction due ahead of the 2028 season, when every squad is taken apart and rebuilt.

That larger event could head outside India again, so the 2027 return may prove a single season's reprieve rather than a change of policy.

IPL auctions have generally been held in the third week of December, though the BCCI is yet to confirm anything formally for this one.

Impact Player rule left for October

The council did not settle the Impact Player rule at the same meeting, deferring a final call to a review next month.

All ten franchises submitted written feedback on the rule by a deadline of 31 August, alongside views on umpiring, practice arrangements and playing conditions.

Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill are among the current players who have argued that the rule squeezes the genuine all-rounder out of the competition and leaves bowlers defending inflated totals.

The board has so far resisted scrapping it, and the October discussion will be the first since the franchises put their positions in writing.

Until the BCCI names a city and a date, the only settled part of the IPL 2027 auction is that the bidding will happen at home.
