IPL 2025: Temporary Replacements Allowed for Remainder of Season, But Ineligible for Retention

As the IPL 2025 season prepares to resume on May 17 following a week-long suspension triggered by India-Pakistan border tensions, the league has introduced a key regulatory change to help franchises manage player withdrawals. Teams will now be permitted to sign temporary replacement players for the remaining matches of the season. However, in a significant move to maintain the integrity of the auction system, the IPL has ruled that these replacement players will not be eligible for retention ahead of the 2026 auction.

This adjustment comes in light of calendar clashes and national commitments that have led to the withdrawal of a handful of overseas players, including Jake Fraser-McGurk (Delhi Capitals) and Jamie Overton (Chennai Super Kings). While most overseas players are returning for the final leg, franchises like DC and CSK have been forced to explore alternatives due to last-minute exits.

Previously, IPL regulations allowed injury or illness-based replacements only up to a team’s 12th match. With this new ruling, the league has reassessed its policy in response to the unusual circumstances, granting teams the flexibility to bolster their squads while preventing misuse of the replacement system to bypass the auction mechanism. According to a memo issued to franchises, the IPL stated:

“Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament... This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026.”

The league made it clear that this rule applies only to replacements signed after the suspension. Players who were brought in before the pause, such as Sediqullah Atal (DC), Mayank Agarwal (RCB), and Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Nandre Burger (RR), retain their eligibility for retention next season.

The decision is widely viewed as a safeguard to ensure that temporary signings serve genuine squad needs rather than being used strategically to sidestep future auction bidding. With the IPL final now set for June 3, this clarification helps teams plan better for the condensed final stretch of the season amid ongoing uncertainty around player availability.
