The IPL 2025 season is set to resume on May 17 and will now conclude on June 3, following a week-long suspension due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the revised schedule late Monday night, announcing that the remaining 17 matches—including 13 league games and four playoffs—will be played across six venues: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. The playoff venues are yet to be disclosed, but the matches are locked in for Qualifier 1 on May 29, Eliminator on May 30, Qualifier 2 on June 1, and the final on June 3.

The tournament will resume with a high-voltage clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru. The rescheduling has also offered a second chance for the abandoned Punjab Kings (PBKS) vs Delhi Capitals (DC) fixture, which was called off midway on May 8 in Dharamsala; this match will now be played in Jaipur on May 24, which will temporarily serve as PBKS’s home base. Two days later, PBKS will take on Mumbai Indians (MI), a match originally slated for Dharamsala on May 11. The calendar also includes two double-headers, both on Sundays: on May 18, Rajasthan Royals (RR) face PBKS in the afternoon, followed by DC vs Gujarat Titans (GT) in the evening; on May 25, GT will host Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the day in Ahmedabad, while Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) take on KKR at night in Delhi. The final league fixture will be held on May 27, when Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) host RCB.

Venue shifts have altered the dynamics for some franchises. PBKS, CSK, and SRH will no longer play on their home grounds. While CSK and SRH are already out of playoff contention, PBKS—sitting third with 15 points from 11 games before the interruption—find themselves forced to play two critical home games in a neutral venue, a twist that could influence their playoff ambitions.

The revised IPL calendar comes with broader implications. It now directly overlaps with the England vs West Indies ODI series, running from May 29 to June 3. This clash affects several players selected in the West Indies squad, such as Romario Shepherd (RCB), Shamar Joseph (LSG), and Sherfane Rutherford (GT). Although England’s squad is yet to be named, key players like Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, Will Jacks, and Reece Topley—spread across teams like GT, RCB, and MI—could be unavailable during the playoffs if selected.

Further pressure arises from the looming World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa, scheduled to begin on June 11 at Lord’s, just a week after the IPL final. Several IPL players are likely to be called up, including Pat Cummins and Travis Head (SRH), Mitchell Starc (DC), Josh Hazlewood (RCB), Marco Jansen and Josh Inglis (PBKS), Kagiso Rabada (GT), Aiden Markram (LSG), and Ryan Rickelton (MI). This tight turnaround raises concerns about workload management and player readiness. The IPL’s extension could also affect India’s preparations for the India A tour of England, beginning on May 30, with several fringe Test hopefuls still committed to IPL duties.

Meanwhile, teams are scrambling to regroup. Many overseas players and support staff had already flown back home following the suspension, forcing franchises to quickly reassemble their squads. Gujarat Titans (GT) seem to be in the best shape, having retained most of their overseas contingent in India—only Buttler and Gerald Coetzee had departed. Mumbai Indians (MI) might also benefit from their first game being scheduled on May 21, giving them extra time to regroup.
