In a significant move to ensure the completion of full 20-over matches despite persistent monsoon disruptions, the IPL has introduced an additional 120 minutes of extra playing time for the remaining nine league phase games of the 2025 season. Traditionally reserved for playoff matches, this extended allowance is now being applied during the league phase to accommodate the unpredictable weather conditions following a week-long suspension of the tournament and the onset of heavy rains across India. This adjustment means that evening matches, which typically conclude by 10:50 PM IST, can now start as late as 9:30 PM IST, while the lone afternoon match scheduled between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings on May 25, usually finishing by 6:50 PM IST, can begin as late as 5:30 PM IST. For shorter matches reduced to a minimum of five overs, the cut-off times extend further, allowing play until 11:56 PM for evening games and 7:56 PM for afternoon fixtures. These changes come in response to a challenging season so far, with three games abandoned due to rain and multiple others shortened, including significant disruptions in Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. The IPL’s proactive scheduling adjustments, including shifting RCB’s May 23 home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad to Lucknow due to severe weather warnings, reflect a concerted effort to maintain the integrity of the competition and provide fans with as much uninterrupted cricket as possible during the rainy season.
