Despite facing a second-string New Zealand lineup, Pakistan’s reshaped T20I squad stumbled to a new low, bowled out for just 91 in the series opener. Their fielding woes have also been glaring—handing over all ten wickets via catches in the first game, and eight of nine in the second.

With the series slipping away, Pakistan must produce a vastly improved performance in Auckland on Friday to keep the five-match series alive. With less than a year until the next T20 World Cup, this match is about more than salvaging pride—it’s about proving the rebuild has potential.

Pakistan are far from full strength, adjusting to life without Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam in this format, and with Saim Ayub injured. The new opening pair of Hasan Nawaz and Mohammad Haris has struggled—first against pace and bounce in Christchurch, then with poor shot selection in Dunedin.

Salman Agha’s 46 off 28, along with lower-order contributions from Shadab Khan and Shaheen Afridi, helped Pakistan post 135 in a rain-shortened 15-over game. However, their bowling—expected to be their stronger suit—failed to contain New Zealand’s aggressive top order.

Tim Seifert and Finn Allen have dominated both games, with Seifert smashing Afridi for 26 runs in an over. With clear skies forecast for Auckland, Pakistan will hope to finally win a toss and make early breakthroughs to test the hosts’ middle order.

New Zealand, meanwhile, have coasted. Their bowlers have thrived, and despite dropping three catches in game one, they've taken 18 in total, underlining their sharpness.
