India vs England Test Series: Harshit Rana Released from Squad Ahead of 2nd Test in Birmingham

Team India has made a key change in their squad for the ongoing five-Test series against England. Young fast bowler Harshit Rana has been released from the squad ahead of the second Test match scheduled to begin on July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

The decision comes shortly after India’s five-wicket defeat to England in the first Test at Leeds. Reports suggest Rana was initially included as a precautionary backup due to minor niggles among the pace attack. However, with the frontline bowlers recovering well, Rana has been sent back home.

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the decision, stating, “There was a bit of a niggle in the group, so we had called him as a backup. But now everything looks fine, so if all bowlers are fit, Harshit will have to fly back.”

Rana was notably absent as the Indian team departed Leeds for Birmingham on Tuesday morning. The team is scheduled to have a two-day rest before resuming practice ahead of the second Test.

Despite posting 835 total runs and boasting five centurions in the Leeds Test—Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant—India failed to defend a 371-run target. England chased it down with a record-breaking performance led by Ben Duckett’s 149, supported by Zak Crawley and Joe Root.

The 1673 total runs scored by both teams is the highest aggregate in a Test between India and England, highlighting the flat nature of the Headingley pitch and the aggressive intent of both sides.
