India defend their Asian Games gold against a Sri Lanka side they beat nine days ago

India and Sri Lanka meet at Korogi Sports Park on Tuesday in a repeat of the Hangzhou gold medal match, nine days after the same two sides contested the Women's Asia Cup final

The defending champions carry the stronger recent record into the Asian Games women's cricket final. India beat Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the Women's Asia Cup final in Dubai on 13 September, and beat them by 19 runs in the Hangzhou final three years ago to take the first women's cricket gold India have won at the Games.

Neither side has lost a match on the way to Nisshin. India dismissed hosts Japan for 57 in the quarter-final and won by eight wickets inside five overs, then beat Bangladesh by 114 runs in the semi-final. Sri Lanka beat Malaysia by 86 runs before chasing down Pakistan's 177 for 4 with 13 balls to spare.

The gold medal match begins at 10:30am IST, with the bronze medal play-off between Bangladesh and Pakistan earlier the same day.

Shafali Verma arrives on a record

Shafali Verma goes into the final having made the first century by a woman in Asian Games cricket, an unbeaten 100 from 49 balls against Bangladesh with nine sixes and three fours. It was also her maiden T20I hundred.

Smriti Mandhana made 37 from 19 before falling on the last ball of the powerplay, and Harmanpreet Kaur added 40 from 33 as India reached 195 for 4.

Shafali Verma also top-scored in the Asia Cup final with 68 from 39, opening with Smriti Mandhana in a stand of 129. Sri Lanka have now had the same problem set for them twice inside nine days.

The attack that bowled Sri Lanka out in Dubai

Bangladesh were bowled out for 81 in 15.4 overs in the semi-final. Deepti Sharma took 3-7, Nandani Sharma 3-25 and Sree Charani 2-7.

Much of the same attack dismissed Sri Lanka for 111 in the Asia Cup final, where Sree Charani took 4-20 and Deepti Sharma 3-19.

Athapaththu carries Sri Lanka again

Chamari Athapaththu made an unbeaten 83 from 50 balls to take Sri Lanka past Pakistan by eight wickets, supported by Hasini Perera with 42 from 26 and Imesha Dulani with 27 from 21.

Pakistan had set a substantial target. Ayesha Zafar made 71 from 40 and Shawaal Zulfiqar 54 from 50 in a third-wicket stand of 115, the highest Pakistan have managed for that wicket in T20Is.

Sri Lanka's quarter-final was similarly one-sided: 160 for 4 against Malaysia, who were held to 74 for 7.

A knockout with no margin for error

The Hangzhou final was a low-scoring match. India made 116 for 7 and Sri Lanka were held to 97 for 8.

The Asian Games competition is a straight knockout — four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the medal matches — with no group stage to absorb a poor day. Bangladesh reached the last four without playing, advancing on seeding after their quarter-final against China was abandoned with a wet outfield.

Pakistan needed the closest finish of the round to get through, beating Thailand by three wickets in a match cut to 11 overs a side.

What Harmanpreet Kaur has said

Speaking after the Asia Cup final, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said: "I think we played to our standards because that's what we discussed when we came here: we have certain standards, and we have to, you know, keep matching them every day."

On her opener, Harmanpreet Kaur said: "I think Shafali had a very, you know, great tournament, and it's good to see somebody like Shafali taking responsibility and doing the job with bat and ball."

Victory on Tuesday would give India a second successive women's cricket gold medal at the Asian Games.
