India arrive in New Chandigarh two matches clear and unbeaten, with the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium set to stage its first men's one-day international
India lead the three-match series 2-0 and play West Indies in the final ODI on Saturday, the series already won in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati. For the visitors, the last match of the one-day leg is about avoiding a 3-0 defeat before the five-match T20I series begins on 6 October.
The occasion carries more than the scoreline. The Mullanpur ground has held a men's T20I and a Test, but never a men's ODI, and it will be the first time Shubman Gill captains India's one-day side on the turf he grew up on.
Both squads flew into Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport on Thursday and skipped training on arrival day, three days after a chase that reset the record books.
The Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium was established in 2021, holds 38,000 and is named after the ninth and last ruling Maharaja of Patiala. It has been the Punjab Kings' home in the Indian Premier League since 2024.
Its international record is short. India played South Africa in a men's T20I there in December 2025 and Afghanistan in a one-off Test in June 2026, and the ground staged women's one-day internationals against Australia in September 2025. Saturday adds the men's fifty-over format to that list.
The Punjab Cricket Association has opened seven parking lots and arranged traffic diversions on the PGI-New Chandigarh road, with tickets in the lower categories close to sold out online.
Gill comes to his home ground on the back of 223 from 133 balls in Guwahati, the fastest double century in men's ODI history. It drove India's pursuit of 406, completed in 43.3 overs with 39 balls remaining.
PCA president Amarjeet Singh Mehta said the "spotlight will also be on Shubman Gill who will lead the side at this ground for the first time." Two more Punjab players, Naman Dhir and Gurnoor Brar, are in the India squad.
The PCA will felicitate former captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the match. Rohit made 101 from 75 balls in Guwahati and passed 12,000 ODI runs in the same innings.
"The PCA is honoured to host the upcoming match, and the presence of two Indian greats will make the event more exciting," Mehta said. "The two stalwarts are an inspiration to youngsters. It's our duty to honour their presence in Mullanpur."
With next year's World Cup ahead, this is likely to be the last time either batter is seen at the ground in India colours before the tournament.
The tourists' problem has not been runs. They posted 295 for 7 in the first ODI and 405 for 7 in the second, their first 400 in one-day internationals, and lost both by eight wickets.
Guwahati brought three centuries in one innings — John Campbell 101 from 65 balls, captain Shai Hope 104 from 94 and Amir Jangoo 114 from 77 — and still ended in defeat, India completing only the second successful 400-plus chase in ODI history after South Africa's reply to Australia in 2006.
Whatever Hope's side produces with the bat in New Chandigarh, the bowling has to hold an Indian top order that has lost four wickets in two matches.
Prasidh Krishna was ruled out of the match on 1 October with a hamstring injury and replaced in the squad by Anshul Kamboj. Mohammed Siraj, left out of the first two ODIs, is available. Justin Greaves missed the second ODI and his fitness is unresolved.
Kuldeep Yadav, the player of the match in Thiruvananthapuram, reached 200 ODI wickets in Guwahati and remains India's control bowler through the middle overs.
The forecast at the ground is sunny and around 34C, and Mullanpur has tended to reward batters, pointing to another substantial total.
The toss is at 1.30pm IST, with play beginning half an hour later.
