The International Cricket Council has suspended USA Cricket’s membership with immediate effect, citing repeated breaches of governance obligations and a continued inability to meet the standards expected of a national governing body. The decision followed months of warnings and conditional extensions granted to the board, which had been under scrutiny for failing to implement a functional administrative structure, struggling to comply with membership criteria, and falling short of securing recognition from the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. According to the ICC, these shortcomings amounted to reputational damage for the game and left the organisation with little choice but to step in. While USA’s suspension strips the board of its administrative authority, the country’s men’s and women’s teams will remain eligible to compete in ICC events, ensuring that players are not penalised for the failures of their administrators. To maintain continuity, the ICC will take temporary control of USA Cricket’s operations and high-performance programmes while also appointing a Normalisation Committee to oversee reforms and guide the body back toward compliance. The suspension highlights the ICC’s determination to enforce accountability and protect the long-term interests of the sport, even as the wider cricketing community in the United States faces uncertainty over its governance future.
