Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson has expressed confidence in a new-look squad for the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh men's national cricket team, saying the emerging players in the team have earned their chance at the international level.
Pakistan have included six uncapped players in the squad for the Bangladesh tour, with the management keen to test fresh talent in conditions that traditionally challenge visiting sides. Speaking ahead of the team’s first training session in Dhaka, Hesson described the squad as an exciting blend of experience and youth.
“These players have done well for Pakistan Shaheens and in domestic cricket, and they have earned the right to get opportunities at the next level,” Hesson said. “It’s an exciting group and we’re looking forward to seeing how they adapt.”
The squad announcement attracted attention after the omission of former captain Babar Azam, but Hesson avoided describing it as a dropping. Instead, he emphasised the importance of giving promising players a chance to prove themselves.
“We don’t get many windows in the calendar where we can try a number of younger players,” he said. “There are several players who have been around the domestic circuit for a while and have been waiting for this opportunity.”
Among those pushing for a breakthrough is Sahibzada Farhan, who impressed during the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup and has also performed strongly in domestic 50-over cricket. Hesson also highlighted the potential of Shamyl Hussain and Maaz Sadaqat, both of whom have been consistent performers in domestic competitions and for Pakistan Shaheens.
Pakistan will face Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series beginning March 11 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, with the remaining matches scheduled for March 13 and 15.
Hesson also noted that the pitch conditions in Dhaka appear improved compared to previous tours, suggesting a more balanced contest between bat and ball.
