England women's cricket team has been dealt a major setback with the news that former captain Heather Knight will miss the remainder of the international summer due to a significant tendon injury in her right hamstring. The injury, sustained during her match-winning knock of 66* against the West Indies in the third T20I at Chelmsford, has been confirmed by MRI scans and will sideline her for upcoming ODIs, the India series in June and July, and the Women’s Hundred in August. Knight’s absence comes at a critical juncture as England undergoes a leadership transition under new captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and head coach Charlotte Edwards. While no official timeline has been given for her return, the ECB remains hopeful that Knight will recover in time for the ICC Women’s World Cup, starting in India on September 29. Her absence, however, leaves a glaring void in both experience and leadership, especially as England looks to rebuild and contend for the title they last won under her captaincy in 2017. Senior players like Kate Cross have acknowledged the challenge ahead and the added responsibility they now share to support Sciver-Brunt, who is still adjusting to her new role. With Knight already having faced significant injury setbacks in her career—such as hip surgery in 2022 that kept her out of the Commonwealth Games—her resilience will once again be tested as she sets her sights on a World Cup comeback.
