Hayley Matthews's 182 breaks the West Indies record in a 99-run win over Zimbabwe

Hayley Matthews has made the highest score by a West Indies batter in women's one-day internationals, her 182 setting up a 99-run win over Zimbabwe in the first ODI in Harare

The West Indies captain opened the batting at Harare Sports Club on Thursday and was dismissed only in the final over, having faced 156 balls and hit 26 fours and two sixes. Her innings carried the tourists to 299 for 6.

Zimbabwe were bowled out for 200 in reply, leaving West Indies 1-0 up in a three-match series that carries ICC Women's Championship points.

The score passed a West Indies mark that had stood since 2013, and took Matthews to a 13th one-day hundred, the most by any West Indies woman.

A record 13 years in the making

The previous best by a West Indies batter in the format was Stafanie Taylor's 171 against Sri Lanka at the 2013 World Cup in Mumbai. Matthews cleared it with 11 to spare.

Her 182 is the sixth-highest individual score in the history of women's one-day internationals. Only Amelia Kerr's 232 not out, Belinda Clark's 229 not out, Chamari Athapaththu's 195 not out, Deepti Sharma's 188 and Laura Wolvaardt's 184 not out sit above it.

The hundred was her 13th in the format, which draws her level with Suzie Bates and Wolvaardt in joint-third place on the all-time list, behind Meg Lanning on 15 and Smriti Mandhana on 14.

Grimmond sets the platform

Matthews and Realeanna Grimmond put on 128 for the first wicket before Grimmond fell for 53, and the captain then rebuilt each time a partner departed.

She added 48 with Shemaine Campbelle, 71 with Chinelle Henry and 36 with Jannillea Glasgow, the last of those coming in 22 balls as West Indies accelerated at the death.

The total of 299 for 6 is the second-highest West Indies have made in a women's ODI, behind only the 368 for 8 they posted against Sri Lanka in that same 2013 World Cup match in which Taylor made her 171.

Mupachikwa alone in the chase

Modester Mupachikwa gave Zimbabwe a start with 86, the only score above 30 in the innings, and put on an opening stand with Sharne Mayers before the wickets began to fall in clusters.

Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano made 26 and no one else passed 20. Zimbabwe were bowled out in the 44th over, 99 runs short.

Aaliyah Alleyne took 3-44 and the spinners Afy Fletcher, Ashmini Munisar and Jannillea Glasgow shared six wickets between them, two apiece.

Championship points at stake

The three ODIs count towards the ICC Women's Championship, the qualification competition in which West Indies sit fifth with four wins from nine matches and Zimbabwe tenth, having lost all six they have played in the cycle.

It is the first bilateral series the two countries have played against each other in any format, and West Indies arrived in Zimbabwe on the back of a 3-0 ODI sweep in Ireland.

"They are a side we haven't played much, and, in their conditions, there will be some challenges," West Indies head coach Shane Deitz said before the series, adding that the tour was "a great opportunity for some players to step up and take their opportunity at this level".

Two ODIs and then a changed squad

The second and third ODIs are at Harare Sports Club on Sunday and on 30 September, before a three-match Twenty20 series at Takashinga Cricket Club on 3, 5 and 7 October.

Matthews leads only the one-day leg. She takes personal leave once the ODIs are done, reducing the touring party from 15 players to 14 for the Twenty20 matches.
