Harry Brook's unbeaten 114 and Sonny Baker's 3-12 crush Sri Lanka in Southampton

England opened the T20I series with a 119-run win over Sri Lanka at the Rose Bowl as Harry Brook made 114 not out and Sonny Baker took three for 12

Sri Lanka won the toss in Southampton on Tuesday and put England in. England posted 254 for 4 from their 20 overs and then dismissed the tourists for 135 inside 19, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Brook, the England captain, reached his hundred from 42 balls and finished unbeaten on 114 from 49, with 10 fours and six sixes at a strike rate of 232.65. It was his first international century in 18 innings across all formats.

Jos Buttler made 80 from 44 balls at the top of the order, and the pair added 128 for the second wicket in a stand that had settled the contest long before Sri Lanka began their reply.

Thirty runs off the fifth over

The innings turned in the fifth over, bowled by Dunith Wellalage, from which Brook took 30 runs — three sixes and three fours.

He reached fifty from 20 balls and had his century 22 deliveries later, matching Liam Livingstone's 42-ball hundred against Pakistan in 2021 as England's joint second-fastest in T20 internationals.

Brook has now gone 288 runs in T20 cricket without being dismissed, following unbeaten innings of 79 and 95 against India in July.

The hundred was his first for England in any format since February, a gap of 18 international innings that had taken in Test, ODI and T20I cricket.

Buttler sets the tone at the top

Buttler brought up his own fifty from 29 balls and struck eight fours and three sixes in his 80, scoring at 181.81.

He and Brook were together for the bulk of the innings, and Sri Lanka's bowlers found no phase in which to apply a brake.

Will Jacks made 21 from 12 balls. Aneurin Donald, on T20I debut, hit a four and a six in his 12 from five deliveries at the close of the innings.

Baker's four overs

Sonny Baker was the pick of the attack with 3-12 from four overs, one of them a maiden, and an economy rate of 3.00.

Kamil Mishara, who made 10 from 14 balls, was among his three wickets.

Sri Lanka's reply needed 12.75 runs an over from the first ball, a rate they never approached.

Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals and never built the platform a target of 255 demanded. Pathum Nissanka went for 12 from 11 balls and the captain, Charith Asalanka, for 10 from nine.

Every England bowler takes a wicket

All six bowlers England used finished with at least one wicket, and only two of the six conceded more than 25 runs.

Baker, Overton and Dawson took seven of the 10 wickets between them.

Jamie Overton took 2-20 and Liam Dawson 2-23, with Josh Tongue (1-25), Jacks (1-21) and Adil Rashid (1-31) sharing the remainder between them.

Wellalage top-scored for Sri Lanka with 33 from 21 balls, including four fours and two sixes, and Dasun Shanaka made 24 from 14 with a four and two sixes.

No other Sri Lanka batter passed 12, and the innings ended with an over unused as the last wicket fell.

Cardiff on Thursday

The second T20I is in Cardiff on Thursday, with the third to follow before the sides meet in a three-match one-day international series.

The match was also the first of Kevin Pietersen's tenure as a mentor to England's white-ball squad.

Sri Lanka have two days before the second match, and a batting line-up that produced only one score above 24 to reconsider.

They must win in Cardiff to take the series to a decider.
