Harmanpreet Sets the Tone: India Aiming to ‘Pass That Benchmark’ Before ODI World Cup

With the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup just around the corner, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has laid out a clear vision for her side: raise the bar, build consistency, and "pass that benchmark" before the marquee tournament kicks off in September.

Speaking after India’s impressive 2-1 ODI series victory in England—a series that saw her score a commanding century in the decider—Harmanpreet highlighted how the team is beginning to align itself with the high-performance standards required to contend for a global title. The captain, now a veteran of over 150 ODIs, believes India’s recent success is more than just a morale boost; it is a signal that the squad is evolving tactically and mentally at the right moment.

“We’re getting closer to what we expect from ourselves,” Harmanpreet said. “To be a title-contending side, we need to consistently go beyond just winning games—we need to hit benchmarks in all departments. We’re talking about scores of 280–300 regularly, bowling with clarity, fielding as a unit. That’s what we mean by ‘passing the benchmark’.”

India's series win in England was full of encouraging signs. Harmanpreet herself starred with the bat in the final ODI, producing a fluent and powerful hundred under pressure. The top-order showed stability, while the likes of Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh provided crucial middle-order support. With the ball, Renuka Singh Thakur and Deepti Sharma led a disciplined attack that frequently choked runs in the middle overs.

But Harmanpreet isn’t letting her team get comfortable. She knows the World Cup is a different beast—more teams, more pressure, and far less margin for error. She wants her squad to make 300-plus scores not an aspiration, but a habit. That, she says, is the mark of a world champion.

“The goal is not to peak too early, but to make sure we have a winning rhythm going into the World Cup,” she explained. “That means not just scoring big runs, but doing it smartly. It means fielding as if every run saved is a match won. We’ve done it in patches, but now it’s time to make that our default setting.”

India will host the ODI World Cup alongside Sri Lanka, starting in late September. With home conditions in their favor and a squad brimming with experience and emerging talent, expectations are naturally high. Harmanpreet, however, remains focused on the process more than the pressure.

“We’re not thinking too far ahead. The idea is to perfect our processes—play fearless cricket, build partnerships, finish games. If we do that, the results will follow.”

With Harmanpreet’s leadership, a hungry dressing room, and the momentum of a series win overseas, India look increasingly like a team ready to go beyond promises and deliver on potential. As the countdown to the World Cup begins, all eyes will be on whether they can indeed pass that benchmark—and perhaps, rewrite history on home soil.
