Hardik Pandya has been named in India A's one-day squad for the home series against Australia A, his first selection in any squad since the injury layoff that began after IPL 2026
The BCCI's Men's Selection Committee picked two India A squads on September 9 for a five-match assignment against Australia A — two multi-day games and three one-day games, all of them in Puducherry.
Pandya's entry on the one-day list carries an asterisk. The board marked him subject to fitness clearance, the same condition it attached to the seamer V Vyshak in the multi-day squad.
Devdutt Padikkal will captain the red-ball side with Sai Sudharsan as his deputy, while Ruturaj Gaikwad leads the one-day team and Padikkal serves as his vice-captain.
The asterisk is the substance of the announcement. Pandya has been selected on the expectation that he will be passed fit rather than on a clearance already granted, and the decision rests with the medical staff at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
The one-day leg opens on October 6, which leaves close to four weeks for that call to be made and for him to complete a bowling workload.
Vyshak faces the same test on a shorter runway. The multi-day leg begins on September 22, a fortnight from the announcement.
Pandya has not played competitive cricket since IPL 2026, a season he spent as captain of Mumbai Indians, and the gap now stands at roughly five months.
Back spasms came first. A quadriceps problem followed during rehabilitation, and he was subsequently ruled out of India's Afghanistan assignment, with a further leg complaint pushing the return date back again.
Each of those setbacks arrived in training rather than in a match, which is part of why the selectors have routed him through India A rather than back into the senior side directly.
Three one-day games in six days would give the medical staff a harder read on the leg than any fitness test at the Centre of Excellence can.
The multi-day squad pairs Padikkal and Sudharsan with Tanush Kotian, Shams Mulani, Tushar Deshpande, Anshul Kamboj, Aman Mokhade, Ayush Pandey, Yash Rathod, Shaik Rasheed, Praful Hinge and Nachiket Bhute, with Kumar Kushagra and N Jagadeesan both listed as wicketkeepers.
Gaikwad's one-day group includes Rajat Patidar, Priyansh Arya, Naman Dhir, Nishant Sindhu, Vipraj Nigam, Arshin Kulkarni, Arshad Khan, Gurjapneet Singh and Yash Thakur, with Prabhsimran Singh and Kushagra keeping wicket.
Sudharsan, Padikkal and Kushagra are the three players named in both squads, so each is available across the full five matches.
The first multi-day match runs from September 22 to 25, the second from September 29 to October 2.
The one-day matches follow on October 6, October 9 and October 11, which holds Australia A in southern India for a block of about three weeks.
Staging the whole tour at one centre keeps both squads in a single training base and removes internal travel from a three-week itinerary.
India A sits between the domestic game and international selection, and an Australia A visit is among the sterner examinations available to a player short of a senior call-up.
Patidar, Prabhsimran Singh and Naman Dhir arrive off IPL seasons, while Kotian and Mulani have built their case in red-ball cricket, and the two-format split lets the selectors look at both groups in turn.
For Pandya, the immediate requirement is simpler than any of that. He needs overs and innings in a match, and the one-day leg is where they are available.
India A begin the series against Australia A in Puducherry on September 22, with Pandya's involvement in the October one-day leg dependent on fitness clearance.
