Graeme Smith Says He’d Like to See More Indian Players Compete in SA20

Graeme Smith, the former South African captain and current commissioner of the SA20 league, spoke with a familiar mix of enthusiasm and realism as he addressed the media this week. With the next edition of South Africa’s premier T20 tournament approaching, Smith shared a hope that has long echoed across cricket’s global conversations:
he would “love to have more Indian players” in the SA20.

Smith explained that whenever the Indian cricket team tours South Africa, stadiums overflow with energy, colour, and passion. The fans, he said, create an atmosphere unlike any other, and it reminded him of the deep bond between the two nations’ cricket cultures. Naturally, he felt that having Indian players participate in SA20 would only strengthen this connection—and elevate the league.

But Smith also understood the limitations. BCCI rules currently prevent active Indian players from joining overseas leagues, and that means only retired Indian cricketers are eligible. He pointed to the example of Dinesh Karthik, who joined SA20 only after stepping away from international cricket. Smith acknowledged that while retired Indian stars bring value, the league’s competitiveness must remain the priority.

Behind his words, though, was a hint of optimism. With six IPL franchise owners already running SA20 teams, Smith believes the league is perfectly positioned—should rules ever change—to welcome Indian players in a way that benefits everyone involved.

For now, he said, SA20 will continue to grow, drawing from its strong fanbases and talented pool of international players. Yet Smith’s message was clear: the door is open, the interest is high, and the hope for Indian participation remains a real and exciting possibility for the future.
