Former Pakistan Head Coach Jason Gillespie and PCB in Contractual Dispute

A financial dispute has emerged between former Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following his resignation from the role in December last year.

In a statement to ESPNcricinfo, Gillespie claimed he is still owed money for services rendered and accused the PCB of multiple contractual breaches. The board, however, maintains that Gillespie violated his contract by failing to provide the required four-month notice prior to stepping down.

According to ESPNcricinfo sources, Gillespie approached the PCB seeking resolution on pending payments, including performance-related bonuses for Pakistan's Test series victory over England in October 2024 and an ODI series win against Australia the following month. Gillespie has referred the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC), although it remains uncertain whether the ICC has jurisdiction over such matters.

Gillespie, who temporarily led Pakistan's ODI side in Australia after white-ball coach Gary Kirsten exited over disagreements with the PCB, stated that he had received explicit written commitments regarding his financial compensation—commitments he says have not been fulfilled.

On Sunday, the PCB issued a rebuttal to Gillespie’s claims in a statement to Pakpassion, asserting that his failure to serve out the full notice period constituted "a clear breach of contractual terms." ESPNcricinfo also reports that the PCB has responded to Gillespie’s inquiries, restating this position and waiting on a reply from his representatives. It is currently unknown whether the board intends to seek damages from Gillespie for his early departure, but it remains a possibility under consideration. The PCB has maintained that it does not owe Gillespie any outstanding dues.

Tensions between the two parties had been simmering well before Gillespie’s resignation. He had been removed from the selection committee two months prior, and later stated that his responsibilities had been downgraded to that of a "matchday strategist"—a role he claimed did not reflect what was initially agreed upon. In November, reports indicated Gillespie would not coach the national team during its tour of South Africa, a decision that came to pass with Aqib Javed stepping in.

Matters worsened when Gillespie's assistant, Australian Tim Nielsen, was informed his contract would not be renewed. Gillespie viewed the move as an attempt to undermine his authority and concluded that the PCB was maneuvering to force his resignation to avoid financial obligations. He handed in his resignation the following day, stating that he had been “completely and utterly blindsided.”

This ongoing dispute surfaced just one day after the PCB announced it was launching the search for a new head coach. Javed, who had been acting as interim head coach since December and oversaw a string of disappointing performances, will not be retained in the coaching setup moving forward.
