GB Cricket Edges Closer to Reality Ahead of 2028 Olympic Return

Cricket’s long-awaited return to the Olympic stage in Los Angeles 2028 has taken a major step forward with the formation of a unified Great Britain (GB) team, representing players from England, Scotland, and potentially Northern Ireland. The initiative, led by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland, aims to create a new entity—GB Cricket—that would oversee participation in what will be cricket’s first Olympic appearance since the Paris Games in 1900, when a British side claimed gold. A joint board, including both executive and non-executive members from the ECB and Cricket Scotland, will manage the body, while a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Cricket Ireland is also in development to enable Northern Irish players to take part. Although Cricket Ireland governs both Northern Ireland and the Republic, and its players typically represent Ireland, some Northern Irish cricketers—such as Paul Stirling, Mark Adair, Andy McBrine, and Amy Hunter—could technically be eligible for GB Cricket. Final recognition from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the British Olympic Association (BOA) is still pending, but an agreement in principle with the ICC is reportedly already in place. While the format and qualification pathway for the six-team Olympic tournament have yet to be finalized, it’s expected that England’s national sides will serve as the primary qualifying vehicle, with Scottish and Northern Irish players considered thereafter. For new England white-ball captain Harry Brook, who begins his tenure against West Indies this week, the Olympic prospect is an exciting but distant dream. “That would be pretty cool to be able to play in the Olympics and get an Olympic gold medal,” he admitted. “But it's so far away, it's miles away yet.”
