England Women A Get Off to a Winning Start in Australia

England Women A made an immediate impact on their multi-format tour of Australia, breaking the trend set by the senior side, who lost all seven of their matches earlier this year. In the opening T20I at Hurstville Oval in Sydney, they secured a three-wicket win over Australia A.

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, England kept the hosts in check, restricting them to 117 for 6 in their 20 overs. Left-arm seamer Mahika Gaur was outstanding, finishing with 2 for 10 from her four overs. She made an instant mark, trapping Tahlia Wilson lbw with the very first ball of the match, as Australia stumbled to 43 for 4 inside the first 10 overs.

Offspinner Georgia Davis supported with figures of 2 for 16 from three overs, while Mady Villiers and Emma Jones also chipped in with wickets. Australia A struggled to find momentum, with their best partnership being a fifth-wicket stand of 49 between Maddy Penna (27) and Rhys McKenna (25), both of whom fell to Davis in quick succession.

In response, England’s chase was anchored by a solid second-wicket stand of 63 between skipper Grace Scrivens (35 off 38) and Paige Scholfield (36 off 29), guiding the team to 80 for 1 by the 12th over. However, Australia fought back, with Lauren Cheatle removing both batters in successive overs and triggering a brief collapse. Freya Kemp, Villiers, and Jones were dismissed cheaply, setting up a tense finish. But Bess Heath remained composed, steering England home with an unbeaten 18, as the team reached the target with five balls to spare.

This tour carries extra weight for England’s women’s program following last weekend’s dismissals of head coach Jon Lewis and captain Heather Knight. Only four players from the Ashes squad, which endured a 16-0 whitewash earlier this year, are part of this revamped A-team.

Grace Scrivens, who led Sunrisers to victory in the final Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and will captain Essex this season, is at the helm for the T20I series, while Hollie Armitage of Durham is set to lead the side in the upcoming 50-over matches.

The squad has faced further setbacks, with Bryony Smith ruled out of the tour due to illness. The Surrey captain, initially named in the white-ball squads, did not travel with the team and was withdrawn after medical assessment in the UK. No replacement will be added to the squad.
