Gambhir Urges Injury Replacements in Tests as Stokes Brands Idea “Ridiculous”

The debate around injury substitutions in Test cricket has taken center stage following a dramatic exchange of opinions between India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and England captain Ben Stokes. He argued that when a player suffers a visible and verifiable injury—like a broken bone confirmed by scans—the team should be allowed to bring in a full-fledged replacement, pending approval by match officials. Gambhir emphasized that Test cricket has evolved in terms of physical demands, and clinging to outdated rules in such cases only penalizes teams unfairly.

“If a player is ruled out due to a serious injury and there’s medical proof, then why shouldn’t a replacement be allowed?” Gambhir asked. “You can’t expect teams to compete with ten players, especially in closely fought Test matches.”

However, Ben Stokes offered a blunt rejection of the idea. Labeling it “absolutely ridiculous,” the England skipper warned that such a rule could be easily exploited under the guise of minor or staged injuries. Stokes stood firm in his belief that part of the essence of Test cricket lies in its grind and unpredictability, where teams are expected to adapt to setbacks, including injuries. “You can’t just bring in a fresh player midway because someone gets hurt. That’s not how Test cricket works,” he said.

Stokes' comments have sparked debate across the cricketing world, with players, fans, and former cricketers weighing in on whether the format should evolve to prioritize player welfare—or retain its long-standing traditions.

As the series heads into the final Test at The Oval, the issue has gained fresh relevance. With Pant officially ruled out and India calling up N Jagadeesan as his replacement, the conversation around injury substitutions is unlikely to go away soon.
