Gambhir puts the fitness of Pandya and Bumrah at the centre of India's 2027 World Cup plan

Gautam Gambhir has named Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah as the two fitness questions that will decide how India arrive at the 2027 World Cup, and neither is in the squad that meets West Indies this weekend

India's head coach, speaking on JioHotstar before the three-match ODI series that starts in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, said the pair were central to his side's chances in southern Africa, and that what both need between now and then is cricket rather than rest.

"Whether it's Hardik, whether it's Jasprit Bumrah, both of them are going to be extremely important for us in South Africa," Gambhir said, before setting out the standard he expects them to meet: "You cannot go there half-cooked. So you should have enough game time, your rhythm should be so good."

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 runs from 4 October to 21 November 2027 across twelve venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. That leaves thirteen months in which India must get an all-rounder back to bowling ten overs and keep a fast bowler fit across three formats.

Game time before rhythm

Pandya has played no competitive cricket since IPL 2026, and Gambhir was direct about what the gap has cost him. "Especially for Hardik, because he needs game time as well. Because after the IPL he hasn't played a lot of cricket," he said.

The coaching staff's reading is that Pandya is not yet able to bowl a full ten-over spell in a one-day international. That, rather than any new setback, is why he was left out of the West Indies squad instead of being eased back into it.

Gambhir framed the wait as a question of value. Very few teams have a player who can bowl his ten overs and still change an innings from No. 6 or No. 7, and India would rather have that player later than a partial version of him now.

Pandya's route back runs through Puducherry

The comeback is expected to come with India A, who play three one-day matches against Australia A at Puducherry on 6, 9 and 11 October, with Ruturaj Gaikwad named captain for that leg of the tour.

The same ground is staging the tour's first unofficial Test, where India A, led by Devdutt Padikkal, set Australia A 363 and had them 55 for 2 at stumps on the third day.

Bumrah is elsewhere, and so is the workload problem

Bumrah is not in the West Indies squad either. He is in Japan with India's Asian Games T20 squad, named alongside Shreyas Iyer, Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh for a tournament running against the home series.

Gambhir said the staff would have to balance Bumrah's one-day and Test commitments to keep him available, a calculation that arrives almost immediately. India tour New Zealand from late October, with the first Test in Wellington starting on 19 November and the second at Hagley Oval from 27 November.

The squad that carries on without them

Shubman Gill leads the ODI side, with KL Rahul as his deputy and Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both back in the squad. Jammu and Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi has a first India call-up.

The three ODIs are at Thiruvananthapuram on 27 September, Guwahati on 30 September and New Chandigarh on 3 October, before a five-match T20I series that begins in Lucknow on 6 October.

No date on either return

Gambhir put no timeline on when Pandya will bowl ten overs again, or on how many one-day internationals Bumrah will play before the tournament. Neither man is being hurried towards a deadline that is still more than a year away.

What he did set out is the test both will be measured against: enough matches behind them, and enough rhythm to matter, by the time India land in Africa.
