Four Teams Battle for Final IPL 2026 Playoff Spot as Qualification Race Goes Down to the Wire

With just five league-stage matches remaining in IPL 2026, the race for the final playoff berth has turned into a dramatic four-way contest involving Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings. The battle is expected to continue until the final day of the league stage on May 24, with net run-rate likely to play a decisive role.

Rajasthan Royals currently hold the advantage with 14 points and a positive net run-rate. Their equation is straightforward — beat Mumbai Indians in their final match and they qualify directly for the playoffs with 16 points. A defeat, however, could reopen the race and bring multiple teams back into contention.

Kolkata Knight Riders revived their campaign with a crucial win over Mumbai Indians and now sit on 13 points. They must beat Delhi Capitals in their final game and hope Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings both lose. If Punjab manage to win, KKR’s weaker net run-rate means they may need a massive victory margin to stay alive.

Punjab Kings remain in contention despite a six-match winless streak. Their superior net run-rate gives them an edge over KKR. A win against Lucknow Super Giants combined with an RR loss could send PBKS into the playoffs.

Chennai Super Kings face the toughest route. CSK need RR, PBKS and KKR all to lose while also defeating Gujarat Titans themselves. Even then, qualification may depend on net run-rate calculations.

Delhi Capitals are technically still alive, but their poor net run-rate leaves them needing near-impossible victory margins to qualify. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad continue their battle for a top-two finish heading into the playoffs.
