Former Australia Fast Bowler Gordon Rorke Passes Away Aged 87

Gordon Rorke, the towering former Australia fast bowler known for his raw pace and controversial bowling style, has passed away at the age of 87.

Rorke made four Test appearances in 1959 — two in the Ashes against England and two in India later that year. He made an immediate impact on debut, claiming five wickets in Adelaide as Australia secured a ten-wicket win to regain the Ashes.

Despite his early promise, Rorke’s career was short-lived, ending prematurely at 25 after he contracted hepatitis during the India tour. His lingering illness meant he never returned to the top level.

Rorke was also at the centre of a delivery controversy — dragging his back foot far enough to land his front foot well beyond the bowling crease, prompting scrutiny and eventually contributing to a review of the no-ball law. “I was frightened that he might tread on my toes,” England’s Colin Cowdrey once remarked after facing Rorke’s thunderous bowling.

In first-class cricket for New South Wales, Rorke took 88 wickets at an impressive average of 24.60.

Cricket NSW paid tribute to Rorke, stating, “Cricket NSW extends its deepest condolences to Gordon's family and friends at this difficult time while celebrating his contribution to our game.”
