Fines for Iyer and Hardik as Over-Rate Breaches Mar IPL 2025 Qualifier 2

The tension-filled IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in Ahmedabad was not only significant for PBKS’ historic win but also notable for disciplinary action, as both captains — Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya — were fined for slow over-rates.

Despite the match starting late due to unseasonal rain — which triggered IPL’s amended conditions allowing an extra two hours for game completion — both teams failed to maintain the required over-rate. The sluggish pace stretched the match well beyond its projected finish.

For PBKS, this marked a second over-rate offence in the season, resulting in a ₹24 lakh fine for Iyer, while Hardik Pandya was docked ₹30 lakh for MI’s third breach. Other players weren’t spared either:

• PBKS squad members were fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee (whichever was lower),

• MI players were penalized ₹12 lakh or 50%, reflecting the repeat nature of the offence.

Interestingly, although this was Hardik’s third over-rate violation as captain — which would have triggered a one-match suspension under previous rules — he avoided a ban due to rule changes implemented ahead of IPL 2025. Notably, a similar breach in 2024 had caused him to miss MI’s opening match this season.

On the field, Iyer’s explosive 87 off 41 balls* powered PBKS to victory, booking their first IPL final appearance since 2014, where they will face RCB. With both franchises yet to win the title despite being part of the league since its inception in 2008, Tuesday’s final guarantees a first-time IPL champion.
