Aaron Finch has raised serious concerns about Kolkata Knight Riders’ faltering IPL 2026 campaign, saying the franchise must stop relying on price tags and start making smarter tactical decisions.
KKR’s struggles this season have been stark. After five matches, they remain winless with just a solitary point coming from a rain-affected game. Apart from a narrow last-ball defeat to Lucknow Super Giants, they have rarely looked competitive, with issues spanning both batting and bowling departments.
Finch was particularly critical of the team’s planning during their recent chase against Chennai Super Kings, describing some of their tactics as “very questionable.” While he acknowledged the attempt to open with Sunil Narine as a positive move, he felt the overall approach lacked intent and clarity, especially during the partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, which failed to put pressure on the opposition.
A key talking point has been the handling of Cameron Green, who has been shuffled across the batting order and even pushed down to No. 6 — a role Finch believes does not suit him. Despite being a high-value auction pick, Finch stressed that team selections should not be influenced by price alone.
Instead, he suggested giving opportunities to specialists like Tim Seifert, who offers more flexibility and attacking options at the top. Finch argued that Seifert’s range of shots and recent form could provide the spark KKR currently lack.
With their next fixture approaching, KKR face a crucial phase in the tournament. A rethink in strategy, clearer roles, and bold selection calls may be their only way out of a season that is rapidly slipping away.
