England women's national cricket team overcame a brilliant counterattack from Richa Ghosh to secure a narrow five-run victory over India women's national cricket team in a T20 World Cup warm-up match in Cardiff.
After being asked to bat first, England posted 171 for 6, powered by half-centuries from captain Nat Sciver-Brunt (57) and Amy Jones (64). The pair laid the foundation before a late flourish from Dani Gibson, who smashed an unbeaten 30 off just 12 deliveries.
India's chase stumbled early with Smriti Mandhana dismissed for one and several batters getting starts without converting them. However, Richa Ghosh produced a sensational 68 off 36 balls, striking nine fours and two sixes to keep India in contention until the final over.
With six runs needed from the last three deliveries, Ghosh was stumped, allowing England to escape with a narrow victory. Left-arm spinner Linsey Smith finished with three wickets, including key breakthroughs in the closing stages.
Both teams will now shift focus to their tournament openers at Edgbaston, with England facing Sri Lanka and India taking on Pakistan.
In another warm-up fixture, Australia women's national cricket team defeated West Indies women's national cricket team by six wickets.
Young opener Georgia Voll anchored the chase with an unbeaten 77 off 48 balls, including ten fours and two sixes, as Australia comfortably chased down 132 with five overs to spare.
Earlier, West Indies were bowled out for 131 despite 46 from Deandra Dottin. Australia shared the wickets around, with Ashleigh Gardner and Lucy Hamilton claiming two wickets each.
The biggest concern from the match was an injury to all-rounder Chinelle Henry, who was stretchered off after landing awkwardly while attempting a catch in the field.
The extent of the injury remains unknown, but Henry is considered a key player for West Indies due to her powerful batting, seam bowling and athletic fielding. With the World Cup set to begin shortly, West Indies will be anxiously awaiting further updates on her condition.
Australia coach Shelley Nitschke also confirmed that Phoebe Litchfield missed the warm-up matches as a precaution due to quad awareness, though she is expected to be available for Australia's opening World Cup fixture.
