England Bat First at Edgbaston as Josh Tongue Debuts and Jasprit Bumrah Returns for India

Birmingham, July 14: England won the toss and elected to bat first against India in the opening ODI at Edgbaston, with Josh Tongue making his debut and Jasprit Bumrah returning to India's playing XI.
England captain Harry Brook backed his batters to capitalise on a flat-looking surface and clear conditions. India skipper Shubman Gill said he would have preferred to bowl first, making England's decision an expected one from both camps.
The biggest change in England's batting order sees Jacob Bethell promoted to open for the first time, partnering Ben Duckett. Tongue, meanwhile, completes his collection of England caps by making his ODI debut.
England enter the three-match series looking to improve a disappointing recent bilateral ODI record. With Brendon McCullum now focused solely on the white-ball set-up, the hosts are also beginning to shape their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
India welcome back several experienced stars after recent T20I series defeats against Ireland and England. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah all return to strengthen the side as India seek a turnaround in form.
The match is also a major milestone for Jos Buttler, who is playing his 200th ODI. Former England captain Eoin Morgan presented Buttler with his commemorative cap before the game, with his family present for the occasion.
England XI: Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook (capt), Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson, Josh Tongue, Adil Rashid.
India XI: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (capt), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, KL Rahul (wk), Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Gurnoor Brar, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna.
